Why is AI making the power grid worse?

AI data centers consume enormous amounts of power, and utilities cannot build capacity fast enough. That drives grid instability, rising demand charges, and outage frequency for everyone connected to the grid, not just AI companies.

Isn’t utility power basically fine?

Utility power is dirty. Voltage sags and spikes, harmonics, frequency drift, and outages are all normal. Sensitive equipment fails faster, LEDs burn out faster, and production equipment lifespan is measurably reduced. Clean on-site power fixes it.

Aren’t generators clean enough?

No. Conventional standby generators typically produce more than 10% Total Harmonic Distortion. Even premium generators are 3 to 6%. Only inverter generators reach below 3%, and none match utility-grade power quality. Physical limitations of alternator design make perfect sine waves impossible.

What about solar?

Solar has its own quality issues. Low-quality inverters produce 3%+ THD; even good inverters are not perfect. On top of that, solar is intermittent by physics and cannot respond to demand spikes without battery storage. Solar plus storage plus firming can, but solar alone cannot.
